Kerra Strum
Fifteen years ago, I was an aerospace engineer who trusted only what could be measured, calculated, and proven. Then I enrolled in a 6-week meditation class during a spiritual crisis—and discovered abilities I didn't know I had.
Abilities I'd actually been using my entire life without recognizing them.
Today, as a licensed psychotherapist and spiritual coach, I blend my scientific background with intuitive gifts to guide awakening souls. If you've been experiencing things you can't quite explain—gut feelings that prove accurate, sensing others' emotions, knowing things without logical explanation—this guide will help you understand what's happening and how to work with it.
Let's start with the basics.
Spiritual gifts are intuitive, energetic, or consciousness-based abilities that allow you to perceive, heal, guide, or create beyond the five physical senses.
These aren't supernatural powers reserved for mystics or chosen ones. They're natural extensions of human consciousness—abilities that become accessible when we learn to quiet the analytical mind and attune to subtler frequencies of information and energy.
While mainstream science is still catching up to understand these phenomena, research in consciousness studies, quantum physics, and neuroscience increasingly validates what spiritual traditions have known for millennia: human consciousness extends far beyond our current materialist paradigm.
Dr. Dean Radin, Chief Scientist at the Institute of Noetic Sciences, has conducted extensive meta-analyses of thousands of experiments on intuition and psychic phenomena. His research demonstrates that "mind-matter interaction is real" and that consciousness can perceive information beyond the ordinary constraints of space and time (Radin, 2006).
Similarly, quantum physics research shows that consciousness appears to play a fundamental role in shaping reality. The famous "observer effect" in quantum mechanics demonstrates that the act of observation affects the behavior of subatomic particles—suggesting a profound connection between consciousness and the physical world (Stapp, 2007).
But you don't need to be a physicist to understand spiritual gifts. You just need to be willing to recognize that your consciousness is capable of far more than you've been taught.
Spiritual gifts aren't new phenomena. For thousands of years, cultures worldwide have recognized and cultivated what they variously call "medicine," "sight," "second attention," or "divine gifts."
Indigenous shamans have served their communities as healers, seers, and guides between worlds. Oracle priestesses in ancient Greece channeled prophecies. Mystics across traditions—from Christian saints to Sufi poets to Buddhist masters—have demonstrated abilities that transcend ordinary perception.
Psychologist Carl Jung wrote extensively about the collective unconscious and synchronicity—meaningful coincidences that suggest a deeper interconnection between psyche and matter. He believed what we call "psychic" abilities were actually natural functions of the unconscious mind accessing this deeper field of information (Jung, 1960).
William James, considered the father of American psychology, studied mystical experiences extensively and concluded that these experiences represent valid forms of consciousness and knowing—not pathology or delusion (James, 1902).
The difference today? We're beginning to have both the spiritual frameworks AND the scientific tools to understand these abilities more comprehensively.
When my spiritual gifts first began emerging during that 6-week meditation class, I was terrified.
My entire identity was built on being rational, logical, scientifically-minded. I worked with precise calculations and measurable outcomes. The idea that I might be "intuitive" or "psychic" felt like a threat to my credibility—both professionally and personally.
Growing up, my grandmother—a Reiki healer and clairvoyant psychic—had exposed me to metaphysics and esoterics. I'd always been fascinated by angels, spirit guides, and higher beings, but never took it seriously. Even after college, when I started reading voraciously about psychic phenomena, angelic encounters, and ancient civilizations like Atlantis and Lemuria, it felt like intellectual curiosity, nothing more.
But then life intervened. I was going through my Saturn Return—a painful breakup had shattered my worldview, and I was questioning everything: my career path, my purpose, who I was at my core. I'd enrolled in the meditation class hoping to find clarity, knowing my engineering career wasn't fulfilling my soul's calling.
Then something happened that changed everything.
A family friend who channels Archangel Michael was hosting a group channeling session. I was skeptical but curious—this was the realm my grandmother had always inhabited, but I'd never experienced it firsthand. During the session, I received personal guidance that was profound. Undeniable. The messages addressed things no one could have known, spoke to questions I hadn't voiced, and opened a door I couldn't close.
That channeling encounter ignited a burning desire to understand these gifts for myself—not just intellectually, but experientially. I needed to know if I could develop these abilities too.
That's what led me to the Southern California Psychic Institute.
The 6-week class was instructional. We learned about chakras, our energy centers, and how to bring balance back to them using light. We practiced tuning into our own internal voice and observing whatever information presented itself without judgment. During those early sessions, I began seeing symbols and colors in meditation. Over months of consistent practice, those evolved into clearer visualizations and stronger intuitive impressions. I began sensing things about people with startling accuracy—not through logical deduction, but through an inner knowing I couldn't explain.
The turning point came when I stopped trying to fit my experiences into my existing paradigm and instead allowed my worldview to expand. I realized that science and spirituality weren't opposites—they were different lenses for understanding the same underlying reality.
I discovered I'm primarily clairsentient (clear feeling), clairaudient (clear hearing), and claircognizant (clear knowing). But here's the thing—I had been clairsentient and clairaudient my entire life without recognizing it.
Those stomachaches, headaches, and uncomfortable sensations I'd get around certain people? They weren't just stress or anxiety. I was absorbing their energy—their physical discomfort, emotional states, and mental patterns—like a sponge.
And those persistent songs playing in my head, with certain words seeming to stand out more than others? That was my clairaudience and telepathic abilities at work. I wasn't just randomly getting songs stuck in my head—I was receiving psychic information. Specific words would be highlighted, almost as if someone had turned up the volume on particular phrases, giving me insight into what someone's ego was thinking or processing. It's not that I could read their thoughts word-for-word, but the universe was communicating their inner world to me through this unique channel.
It wasn't until I learned clearing techniques and how to set energetic boundaries through that meditation class that I could finally distinguish my energy from everyone else's. More importantly, I learned to differentiate my own psychic content—my thoughts, beliefs, higher consciousness, and wisdom—from the information I was picking up from others. Learning to tune into my own body's subtle cues while tuning out others' energy was transformative. It took many years of regular spiritual practice to fully understand and work with these abilities.
Over time, I also developed abilities in energy healing (I'm a Reiki practitioner studying to become a master), sound healing, and what I call "therapeutic intuition"—a blend of psychological understanding and spiritual insight that informs my clinical work.
These gifts didn't all emerge overnight. They unfolded gradually as I:
Today, fifteen years later, I guide awakening souls through the exact journey I lived—helping them discover, develop, and trust their own spiritual gifts.
Spiritual gifts manifest in remarkably diverse ways. Just as people have different natural talents—some excel at music, others at mathematics—spiritual gifts vary widely from person to person.
Here's a comprehensive overview of the types of spiritual gifts you might experience:
1. Intuitive & Psychic Gifts
These abilities involve perceiving information through non-physical channels:
The "Clair" Abilities:
Clairvoyance (Clear Seeing): Receiving visual information beyond ordinary sight—visions, symbols, images, or seeing auras. Neuroscience research shows that brain regions associated with visual processing can activate during visualization even without external visual stimuli (Kosslyn et al., 2001).
Clairaudience (Clear Hearing): Receiving auditory information—an inner voice, guidance, or messages from higher consciousness.
Clairsentience (Clear Feeling): Feeling others' emotions, sensing energy in spaces, or experiencing physical sensations related to energetic information. Research on emotional contagion and mirror neurons provides neurological basis for how we unconsciously absorb others' emotional states (Hatfield et al., 1993).
Claircognizance (Clear Knowing): Sudden downloads of information or understanding without conscious reasoning. Studies show intuition often precedes conscious awareness (Dijksterhuis & Nordgren, 2006).
Clairalience (Clear Smelling): Perceiving spiritual scents—smelling flowers when none are present, or catching the signature scent of a deceased loved one.
Clairgustance (Clear Tasting): Receiving spiritual information through taste—experiencing flavors without physical cause.
Other Intuitive Gifts:
2. Healing Gifts
These gifts involve facilitating healing—physical, emotional, spiritual, or energetic:
Energy-Based Healing:
3. Divination Gifts
These involve accessing information through sacred tools or systems:
4. Connection Gifts
These involve connecting with non-physical consciousness:
5. Creative & Expressive Gifts
These involve channeling healing energy through creative expression:
6. Guidance Gifts
These involve holding space for and guiding others:
7. Manifestation Gifts
These involve consciously working with energy to create:
8. Advanced & Rare Gifts
These are less common abilities that typically require significant spiritual development:
As you read through this comprehensive list, here's what's important to understand:
1. Most People Have Multiple Gifts
You likely won't have just one gift. Most people have several gifts that work together synergistically. For example, someone might be clairsentient (feeling energy) AND have healing gifts AND be naturally drawn to tarot reading.
2. Gifts Evolve Over Time
The gifts you have now might not be the same gifts you develop in five years. As you grow spiritually, new abilities often emerge while existing ones deepen.
3. Some Gifts Are Natural, Others Are Developed
You might be born with strong clairsentience but develop mediumship abilities through study and practice. Both natural inclination and intentional development matter.
4. All Gifts Are Equal
There's no hierarchy of "better" or "more powerful" gifts. A person with strong empathic abilities is no less gifted than someone who sees visions. Each gift serves its unique purpose.
5. Gifts Connect to Your Soul's Purpose
Your specific combination of spiritual gifts isn't random. They're connected to your soul's mission and how you're meant to serve during this lifetime.
While we don't yet understand everything about spiritual gifts through a scientific lens, emerging research provides compelling frameworks:
Quantum Consciousness Theory
Physicists Roger Penrose and Stuart Hameroff propose that consciousness operates at the quantum level, potentially explaining phenomena like intuition and non-local perception (Hameroff & Penrose, 2014).
Morphic Resonance
Biologist Rupert Sheldrake's theory suggests information can be transmitted across space and time through resonant fields—providing a potential mechanism for telepathy and collective consciousness (Sheldrake, 1981).
Heart-Brain Coherence
HeartMath Institute research demonstrates that the heart generates a powerful electromagnetic field detectable several feet away, and that heart rhythms affect perception and intuition (McCraty et al., 2009).
Highly Sensitive Person (HSP) Research
Dr. Elaine Aron's research shows that 15-20% of people have enhanced sensory processing sensitivity. HSPs often have stronger intuitive abilities and process subtle information more easily (Aron, 1996).
Global Consciousness Project
Princeton University's long-running study has documented statistical anomalies in random number generators during major world events—suggesting a global field of consciousness (Nelson, 2011).
If you've felt drawn to this article, it's likely because your own spiritual gifts are awakening—or trying to.
Perhaps you've been dismissing your experiences as coincidence or imagination. Maybe you've been told you're "too sensitive" or that your intuitive hits are "just lucky guesses." Or maybe you've been hiding your abilities because you're afraid of being judged.
Here's what I want you to know:
Your experiences are valid. Your gifts are real. And discovering them isn't about becoming special or proving anything—it's about recognizing abilities that are already within you.
These gifts aren't party tricks or ways to feel superior. They're tools for service, healing, and contributing to the evolution of consciousness. They're part of your soul's purpose and your unique contribution to the world.
Fifteen years ago, I walked into a meditation class as a skeptical engineer. I walked out on a path that led me to my soul's work—blending psychology, spirituality, and intuitive healing to guide others through their awakenings.
Your gifts are calling you toward your path too.
The question is: Will you answer?
Developing your spiritual gifts is a deeply personal journey that requires guidance, practice, and community support. While you can begin exploring on your own through meditation and paying attention to intuitive patterns, truly activating and working with these abilities is best done with structured guidance and experiential learning.
In upcoming posts, I'll be diving deep into:
